Bonita Melody Lysette "Bonnie" Langford (born 22 July
1964) is a British actress and entertainer who first achieved fame as a
child actor, starring in the television series Just William and
the film Bugsy Malone. From the early part of her career, she is
also associated with fellow child-star Lena Zavaroni.
Langford was
born at Hampton Court, Surrey. She lives with her husband, fellow actor
Paul Grunert (most notable for appearances in Chucklevision) whom she
married in 1995, his daughter from a previous marriage, and their daughter
(born 2000).
Her stage work includes Peter Pan: The
Musical, Cats and The Pirates of Penzance. She
later appeared in the cult British series Doctor Who as the
Doctor's companion Mel. She continues to appear as Mel with both the Sixth
Doctor and Seventh Doctor in the Doctor Who audio adventures
produced by Big Finish Productions.
Bonnie was a regular guest
(2003-2005) on Sandi Toksvig's weekday lunchtime show on LBC radio and
occasionally deputised when Sandi was ill or on holiday.
She has
received a fair amount of abuse over her career, as she has been widely
perceived as an overly perky youth. Noel Coward reportedly made the
comment, after seeing a play with the young Bonnie Langford in it in which
a horse also defecated on the stage, "If they had shoved the child's head
up the horse's arse they would have solved two problems at
once."
On October 23, 2005 Bonnie performed in Children Will
Listen, a 75th birthday tribute to Stephen Sondheim at the Theatre
Royal, Drury Lane in London and appeared in the pantomime
Cinderella as Prince Charming at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in
Guildford during Christmas 2005.
Bonnie is a celebrity contenstant
on ITV's Dancing On Ice, which started on January 14th 2006,
along with another ex-Doctor Who companion and musical theatre
stalwart John Barrowman. Her skating partner is American pair skater and
member of the US skating team Matt Evers. While competing on Dancing
on Ice, Bonnie appeared as part of a star-studded cast in one of
ITV's Agatha Christie's Marple series
episodes.
