Evan David Taubenfeld (b. June 27 1983) was mostly
known for being Avril Lavigne's lead guitarist from Spring 2002 to
September 2004.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Jewish
parents Mark and Ami. He began his musical career playing drums in a local
band, The Suburbanites, while in seventh grade. Three years later, he
learned to play the guitar and founded Spinfire where he was the lead
singer/songwriter. The band broke up in Autumn 2002. He graduated from
McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland in June 01, and intended to
study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he
had been accepted to the previous fall.
In fall 2002 he received a
call from the Vice-President of Artists and Repertoire for Arista Records,
who was seeking people to audition in New York with new artist Avril
Lavigne. Evan auditioned for a position as the drummer and the bass
guitarist. After playing a few riffs, Taubenfeld was offered a contract as
lead guitarist and backing singer.
In June 2003, while on the road
with Avril he formed another band — a side project called Ditch
Ruxton. Their first show took place at a Baltimore, Maryland night club
called Fletcher's. The band split after less than a year, and never
performed a second show.
In May 2004, Lavigne released her second
album Under My Skin. Her first single, "Don't Tell Me", was
co-written by Taubenfeld. He also co-wrote the songs "Freak Out" and "Take
Me Away", and was in the studio with Lavigne to record backing vocals,
guitars, and drums on two of the tracks (he didn't record anything on
"Take Me Away"). Shortly afterwards, Taubenfeld signed as a staff writer
with EMI Music Publishing. Amid rumours of a relationship gone sour with
Lavigne, Evan left the band in September 2004, to pursue his own
projects.
In October 2004 Taubenfeld signed to Sire/Warner Bros
records, and his full-length debut solo album is currently due out in
mid-2006.
